Rule #1: Keep your Treo, BlackBerry, iPhone, etc. handy.
In most social circles, being surgically attached to your iPhone or BlackBerry is totally rude. At Fashion Week, it’s a must! How else are you going to tap out urgent messages (e.g., “OMG: Whitney and Olivia both sitting front row at Thakoon. Hair=Amazing!”) to coworkers and friends?

Rule #2: Never be early—or on time.
There’s a reason the term is “fashionably late”—because fashion folks have perfected the art of turning up a nonchalant 20 minutes past expected arrival time. If a show starts at 1:30, that means 2. If a party starts at 8, that means 10:30. Looking too eager by arriving early? Totally out of style.

Rule #3: Play it cool.
Yes, that dress coming down the runway at Zac Posen is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever laid eyes on. Yes, you’d give up a kidney to wear it on your wedding day. And no, you can’t contain your excitement anymore. But you must! A simple golf clap—reserved for the end of the show—is the respectful amount of enthusiasm to show for the clothes. Oohs and aahs may be used sparingly.

Rule #4: Ignore (or pretend to ignore) the celebrities.
Fashion Week presents plenty of opportunities to espy celebs in their natural habitats. But like a visitor to the rain forest, you must maintain your distance! No drooling, gawking, awkward photo-snapping or autograph seeking. Unless, of course, you’re under the age of 16, in which case all of the above are not only acceptable but completely adorable.

Rule #5: Take off your sunglasses. Please.
While the bright runway lights and paparazzi flashes might seem like they could harm your retinas, unless you’re one of five Fashion Week VIPS—who need the armorlike protection of shades—wearing sunglasses inside is a major fashion faux pas.

Rules #6: Crashing is not OK.
Between the burly security guards at every entrance and an army of savvy fashion PR folks (who have a sixth sense for spotting crashers), sneaking into a runway show that you’re not invited to is virtually impossible—not to mention potentially traumatizing. Being turned away at the door in front of the well-dressed masses is right up there on the embarrassment scale with leaving the gym all sweaty and gross, then running into your ex.

Rule #7: Keep the chitchat to a minimum.
Just like when flying, don’t assume the person in the seat next to you wants to talk. Whether furiously concentrating on the show or just channeling the fashion crowd’s cool and aloof vibe, your neighbor might be not be up for chatting about who’s wearing what in the front row.
